The 2009 NCI Translational Science Meeting (TSM2) will be held November 5-7, 2009 in Vienna, Virginia. Like last year’s meeting, the overarching goal of the meeting is to accelerate early translational cancer research and enhance scientific collaborations and interactions among all of the NCI supported translational science investigators. In addition, TSM2 has become an integral part of the NCI’s new Process to Accelerate Translational Science (PATS) initiative. PATS is a yearly process to identify a small number of projects that are “ripe” for translation and provide the financial resources and the project management required to expedite moving those projects to the point of early stage clinical trials.
For additional information, please visit the meeting Web site at http://ncitranslates.nci.nih.gov.
Translational science accomplishments of each investigator invitee will be shared in poster discussion sessions. Poster discussion sessions are organized around each of the TRWG pathways. Through the approximately 30 poster discussion sessions, the meeting is designed to provide a venue to identify research projects and expertise that might be linked together to generate a unique translational research opportunity.
NCI believes that the patient perspective is essential to this meeting and over 30 advocates have been selected to participate. Two advocates will participate in each poster discussion session and ensure the inclusion of the patient perspective in the discussion.
1. NCI Program Directors invite translational research principal investigators (PIs) to present their research at NCI Translates through poster discussion sessions.
2. Those PIs are then asked to nominate advocates to participate in the NCI Translates meeting.
3. Advocates submit completed nomination forms to NCI.
4. NCI receives nominations from PIs for advocate participants by the deadline.
5. A committee of NCI staff assess the nomination forms for the advocate’s applicable research advocacy experience.
6. Nominations are matched with poster session topics. Matches are based on self-reported contributions to specific scientific areas.
